ICT Accessibility: EN 301 549 and WCAG Explained

ICT accessibility standards help teams specify and test whether people with disabilities can use websites, software, hardware and related services. Start with the product and the users' tasks, then identify the requirements that apply.

What the package contains

The Genorma ICT accessibility collection lists a 2021 publication of EN 301 549 and WCAG 2.1. It is a retailer's document collection, not a separate certification scheme.

EN 301 549 and WCAG have different scopes

WCAG concerns web content. EN 301 549 covers a broader range of ICT and includes requirements beyond WCAG. The European Commission's Web Accessibility Directive guidance explains the role of the cited edition and Annex A. Meeting WCAG alone does not establish conformity with every applicable requirement of EN 301 549.

A practical assessment plan

  1. List the websites, applications, documents, devices and support channels in scope.
  2. Record the applicable law or procurement specification and exact standard edition.
  3. Test representative tasks, including navigation, forms, error recovery and access to help. Combine automated checks with manual and assistive-technology testing.
  4. Record barriers, affected users, evidence and an owner for each correction. Retest after changes.

Buying the collection does not make a service compliant. Likewise, accessibility improvements can make content easier to use, but do not guarantee higher search rankings. Select the requirements for the relevant jurisdiction and keep the assessment evidence.

What Does prEN Mean? Draft Standards and Placeholder References

prEN means draft European Standard. It identifies a document under development, rather than a published EN. CEN and CENELEC distinguish draft standards (prENs) from European Standards (ENs) . Does “prEN 50XXX” identify a particular standard? Not on its own. “50XXX” is a placeholder-style reference, so it cannot establish a document's technical subject or requirements without its project context.
