Accommodation Standards: Choosing a Practical Management Scope
A hotel, guesthouse or other accommodation business should choose standards around the work it needs to improve. Service delivery, accessibility, environmental performance and safety raise different questions; one document or collection should not be assumed to address them all.
An example: sustainability management
ISO 21401 sets requirements for a sustainability management system for accommodation establishments. Its scope includes environmental, social and economic aspects that the establishment can control or influence. It can be applied by different sizes and types of establishment.
This makes it relevant to management processes and responsibilities. It should not be described as a guarantee of higher occupancy, lower operating costs or a particular guest rating.
Define the intended improvement
- Select a concrete issue, such as resource use, supplier practices or a recurring service problem.
- Identify the people responsible and the information already available.
- Check the scope of the proposed standard and the work needed to apply it.
- Choose a baseline, a meaningful measure and a review date.
For example, a property investigating resource use needs consistent records and a clear comparison basis before it can attribute a change to a management action. A certificate or a new written policy does not replace those records.
Check a package before buying
The accommodation-establishments collection is a purchasing option to investigate. Verify its current itemised contents, editions and language directly with the seller. This article does not establish that ISO 21401 or any other particular document is included in that package.
Consider applicable local requirements separately and connect the chosen management work to the services your establishment actually provides.
