AI Standards Explained: Terminology, Risk and Management Systems
AI standards address different tasks. A vocabulary, a system framework, risk guidance and management-system requirements can all be useful, but they do not make the same claim about an AI product. Published ISO documents The ISO/IEC AI standards catalogue includes ISO/IEC 22989:2022 for concepts and terminology, ISO/IEC 23053:2022 for a framework describing AI systems using machine learning, and ISO/IEC 23894:2023 for AI risk-management guidance. The first two are published standards, not simply projects awaiting publication. ISO/IEC 42001:2023 addresses an AI management system. ISO explains its purpose in the ISO/IEC 42001 overview . A management system concerns how an organisation manages its activities; it is not a guarantee that every model output is correct or free of bias. How NIST guidance differs The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary guidance.
