Furniture Standards: Safety and Sustainability Evidence

Furniture assessment starts with the product and how it will be used. A chair, a storage unit and a table present different questions, and domestic, office and other use contexts should not be treated as interchangeable.

Define the product before selecting a test

Record the furniture type, intended users, use environment, configuration and relevant design features. Use that description to select standards with an appropriate scope. A test report for one configuration may not establish performance for a changed product.

When reviewing supplier evidence, check the exact model, test method, standard edition, results and any limitations. A reference to a familiar standards organisation is not, by itself, a result or a certificate.

Separate different claims

  • Safety and durability: identify the specific assessment and the product it covers.
  • Materials and sourcing: establish which materials, supply-chain information or independent scheme support the claim.
  • Environmental performance: state the metric and boundary instead of relying on a broad 'green' label.

LEED should not be described as a standalone furniture certification. USGBC's rating-system guidance concerns building and project certification. A product's potential contribution to a project requirement is different from the product itself being 'LEED certified'.

Write a useful purchasing brief

Specify the intended use, required evidence and acceptable product identification. Ask suppliers to explain how their evidence matches those requirements. Keep legal, contractual and voluntary requirements identifiable so that a broad marketing statement is not mistaken for a complete compliance assessment.

Standards-based tests can support a defined claim. They do not guarantee unlimited service life or suitability for every setting.
